SKL Machine Island

A projection of the Machine Island

Machine Island (奇械島) is the main setting for the Mazinkaiser SKL OVA and volume 2 of Mazinkaiser SKL Versus.

History[]

The Machine Island was an island on the pacific with a Gravity Engine at its heart. Following the end of a great war, the island was separated from the rest of the world by a Gravity Curtain, which prevented access from both air and sea. The descendents of the island's inhabitants eventually separated into three factions: the Hachiryokaku, a group of peaceful female psychics led by Aila; Kiba Army, a group of lawless ruffians led by Kiba; and Garan Army, an army styled after ancient Rome and Japan led by Garan.

Each of the three factions controlled a robot factory, which manufactured an endless supply of combat robots using power from the Gravity Engine. Using these robots, Kiba and Garan's armies fought an endless war for domination while the Hachiryokaku fought to preserve itself. Eventually, a WSO satellite picked up a final alarm from the Gravity Engine, signalling the impending collapse of the Gravity Engine, which would destroy the Earth's magnetic field and devastate all life on Earth.

In order to stop the Gravity Engine, the WSO's military arm, Skull Force, deployed the Death Caprice Squad to the island as the advance team. However, the entire team was wiped out save for Ken Kaido and Ryo Magami, who fought against both Kiba and Garan's armies in the Mazinkaiser SKL. Having lost contact with the Death Caprice Squad, the Gren Falcon Squadron, led by Scarlet Hibiki, was sent in to shut down the Gravity Engine. However, upon entry into the Gravity Curtain, their transport was attacked, killing the entire squadron save for Tsubasa Yuki.

The Gren Falcon Squadron's landing site was revealed to be a massive battlefield between Kiba and Garan's forces. Fortunately, Tsubasa was rescued by the Mazinkaiser, whose pilots brought her to Hachiryokaku to recuperate before wiping out Kiba's forces outside. Aila briefly explained the situation on the island to Tsubasa and revealed that the Gravity Engine's controls were separated across all three robot factories. Soon after, Kiba launched an all-out assault on Hachiryokaku in order to capture its inhabitants. However, Mazinkaiser wiped out his army and destroyed Kiba's robot, the Bakuryuki, apparently killing him.

Having destroyed the vast majority of Kiba's army, the Skull Force trio shut down Kiba's robot plant with very little problem. Meanwhile, Aila shut down Hachiryokaku's robot plant as well, leaving only Garan's plant. Later, after Garan sent most of his forces for an attack on Hachiryokaku, the Death Caprice Squad launched an attack on his fortress, eventually duelling Garan in his robot, the Geistteles. However, due to Garan taunting Magami about his nature as an Erbsünde as well as mental attacks from Himiko, Magami went into a berserk rage and attacked mindlessly, causing the Mazinkaiser to lose and fall down a cliff.

At Hachiryokaku, the Psycho Gear army was being overwhelmed by Garan's forces. However, Tsubasa turned the tide of the battle when she joined the fight in the Wingle. Suddenly, the Gravity Engine emerged from the ground and began going berserk, generating a massive shockwave that wiped out Garan's entire invasion force. The shockwaves were felt even outside the island, causing floods in all cities along the pacific coast.

As the Mazinkaiser resumed its duel with Geistteles, Kiba, alive but heavily disfigured, snuck into Garan's palace and murdered Himiko in search of a great power. Feeling Himiko's death through their psychic connection, Garan was momentarily distracted, allowing the Mazinkaiser to kill him. Immediately after, Kiba emerged in the Iron Kaiser, which had been sealed under Garan's castle all along.

The Mazinkaiser and the Iron Kaiser engaged in a fierce battle. Meanwhile, Tsubasa learned from the WSO that Iron Kaiser was powered by a Graviton Reactor, just like the Gravity Engine. Realizing that its could be used to annihilate the berserk Gravity Engine, the Mazinkaiser docked with Wingle's wings, unlocking all of its weapons and abilities. The empowered Mazinkaiser defeated the Iron Kaiser and dragged it into the hole created by the Gravity Engine's meltdown before finishing it off with the Inferno Blaster, successfully annihilating the Gravity Engine.

Following the loss of the Gravity Engine, most of the island sank into the ocean save for Hachiryokaku, which was protected by a psychic barrier.

Trivia[]

  • In Super Robot Wars UX, Machine Island's backstory was greatly expanded. The island was established after the Second World War to research alternate energy sources to replace the dwindling fossil fuels. The island produced a mineral called "Odyssite", which served as the catalyst for the Gravity Engine. All of the island's inhabitants were Erbsünde, with Garan's people being created to seal away the Iron Kaiser (which, in this version, was summoned by the Odyssite from beyond time and space), Kiba's people being created to monitor the "Sleeping Beauty" (Fei-Yen HD), and Aila's people responsible for maintaining the Gravity Curtain.
